A perfect combination for the lovers of the nature, protected by the Atlantic forest, to 64,5 km to the north of Ilhéus, it possesses countless streams to be going to Atlantic ocean, standing out Rio de Contas, it crosses the municipal district in an extension of 72 km to the mouth, Barra de Itacaré, exactly where was born the city.
In the whole municipal district they live little more than 20 thousand inhabitants, the city has as natural scenery an ecological reservation that it includes virgin forests, sandbanks and growth of mangroves, besides other natural charms.

Itacaré is the lovers' of the nature refuge, of the surf, of the radical sports, of the capoeira and of authentic Bahia. With their streets of paving stones and their old big houses, the city conserved all the charm of the past. Many bars and restaurants do of the night of Itacaré one of the most lively of the area.
The coast of Itacaré is a succession of beaches and of hills covered by forests and coconut trees. The located beaches close to the city are the more frequented and they possess good tourist infrastructure. The more moved away are deserted and beautiful, but little offer access for cars. There is, still, some such small beaches and hidden that nor they consist in the tourist guides.

City that had origin starting from a village of Indians pataxós, to the north of Ilhéus, when the Jesuit Luís of Grã raised in the century XVII, in the southern margin of the Rio de Contas, a chapel in praise to the Arcanjo São Miguel, baptizing the town of São Miguel of Barra of Rio de Contas (created by the Royal Letter of 1731), current Itacaré (of the Tupi-Guarani ita - stone and karé - arched, crooked), one of the most beautiful sceneries of the Cocoa Coast.
The church São Miguel, with approximately 300 years, and the house of the Jesuits is the more important historical monuments of the city. The municipal district still preserves remained and big houses, now transformed at lodgings and commercial houses.
